Tastes

I have eclectic and impeccable tastes in most things and a strong belief in the value of multiculturalism.

Music

The music I enjoy most tends to be either free-form and improvisational or highly structured. Whatever form it might take, it really has to be complex and played extremely well. For example, I like most music I've heard by Monteverdi, Purcell, J S Bach, Haydn, Beethoven, Busoni, Schoenberg, Berg, Webern, Boulez, Kurtag, Stockhausen and a plethora of Russian and Soviet composers, especially Shostakovich. In jazz my taste has drifted almost exclusively towards the free variety, exemplified by the likes of Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, and various people who have been associated with them - John Tchicai, Hartmut Geerken, Famadou Don Moye, Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, and so forth. I've always liked the Blues (especially Robert Johnson) and have recently begun to appreciate Bluegrass. I hardly ever listen to any "rock" these days, apart from the incomparable Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band.
